Hello, friend. Welcome to Authorized Sword Ministries.

We're so glad you're here.

Where This Course Begins

In Part 1 of Breaking Free, we looked at abusive relationships and the freedom God gives to get safe. Part 2 looks ahead. How do you find a godly husband or wife, and avoid getting trapped again? Over four lessons we'll look at God's design for marriage, being equally yoked, what to look for, and the red flags to watch for before you say "I do."

Today is Lesson One. It's called "God's Design for Marriage."

Our Key Verse

"And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him."
— Genesis 2:18 (KJV)

Marriage Was God's Idea

Marriage didn't start with people. God made the man, saw he was alone, and made the woman.

"And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man."
— Genesis 2:22 (KJV)
"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."
— Genesis 2:24 (KJV)

One man and one woman, leaving their parents, joined together as one flesh. Jesus quoted these same words when He taught about marriage (Matthew 19:4-6).

Marriage Is Good

"Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD."
— Proverbs 18:22 (KJV)

That verse is written about a man finding a wife. As an application, the same is true the other way: a godly husband is a good gift from the Lord too.

Being Single Is Not Second Best

Paul, who was not married, said singleness can be a gift, and marriage can be a gift.

"For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that."
— 1 Corinthians 7:7 (KJV)
"But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:"
— 1 Corinthians 7:32 (KJV)
"There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband."
— 1 Corinthians 7:34 (KJV)

Paul says an unmarried man or woman can care for "the things of the Lord." Being single isn't a waiting room. It's a time you can serve God fully.

Content While You Wait

"Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content."
— Philippians 4:11 (KJV)
"Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."
— Psalms 37:4 (KJV)
"Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass."
— Psalms 37:5 (KJV)

Delighting in the Lord comes first. As He shapes your heart, your desires start to line up with His will. That verse is a promise about trusting God, not a promise of a certain person. Commit your way to Him and let Him lead.

If You've Been Hurt Before

If you came out of an abusive relationship, don't rush. Let God heal you first (Psalms 147:3). Loneliness is a poor reason to marry. Waiting on God is never wasted.

"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
— Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)

Closing Thought

Marriage is God's good design, and singleness is a good gift too. Either way, put the Lord first. Next time, in Lesson Two, we'll see why faith has to come first in choosing a spouse.

Let Us Pray

Father, thank You for Your good design. Give every single man and woman contentment in You, and patience to wait on Your timing. In Jesus' name, amen.
