Lessons 1–4
Test what you learned in all four lessons of Strength for Those Who Serve: Lesson 1 ("Be Strong and of a Good Courage"), Lesson 2 ("The Whole Armour of God"), Lesson 3 ("Under His Wings"), and Lesson 4 ("Faith Under Authority"). The answer is under each question.
1. In Joshua 1:9, what reason did God give Joshua for being strong and of a good courage?
A) Because Joshua was strong enough
B) Because the mission would be easy
C) Because the LORD his God was with him wherever he went
D) Because his army was bigger
Answer: C) Because the LORD his God was with him wherever he went.
Courage comes from God's presence. "Whithersoever" means wherever: any base, any ship, any country, any watch.
"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." — Joshua 1:9 (KJV)
2. True or False: Being brave means you never feel afraid.
Answer: False.
Courage means doing what's right while you feel it. Even David, the warrior king, said "what time," not "if." In those times, take your fear straight to God.
"What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee." — Psalm 56:3 (KJV)
3. According to 2 Timothy 1:7, God has not given us the spirit of fear. What has He given us?
A) Power, love, and a sound mind
B) Money, rank, and rest
C) Luck and good timing
D) Nothing; we must find it ourselves
Answer: A) Power, love, and a sound mind.
Power to do what you have to do. Love for the people beside you and back home. And a sound mind, clear and steady.
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." — 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
4. According to Ephesians 6:12, who is the believer's real enemy?
A) Other people
B) The government
C) Our own families
D) Not flesh and blood, but the devil and spiritual wickedness
Answer: D) Not flesh and blood, but the devil and spiritual wickedness.
This is a spiritual battle against the devil's tricks: temptation, discouragement, and lies that say God has forgotten you.
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." — Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)
5. Which piece of the armour of God is the only one for striking back?
A) The shield of faith
B) The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
C) The helmet of salvation
D) The belt of truth
Answer: B) The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
When Jesus was tempted, He answered the devil three times with Scripture: "It is written." Learn the Word, and you'll have a sword in your hand.
"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:" — Ephesians 6:17 (KJV)
6. True or False: Prayer is like keeping your line open to headquarters, and the Bible says to pray always.
Answer: True.
On watch, on the move, and in the rack at night. And pray "for all saints," including the believers beside you.
"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;" — Ephesians 6:18 (KJV)
7. In Psalm 91, what is the difference between a "refuge" and a "fortress"?
A) There is no difference
B) A refuge is a place you run to; a fortress is a place that holds
C) A refuge is a hospital; a fortress is a prison
D) A refuge is for animals; a fortress is for kings
Answer: B) A refuge is a place you run to; a fortress is a place that holds.
God Himself is both.
"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust." — Psalm 91:1-2 (KJV)
8. True or False: Psalm 91 promises that a believer will never be hurt and never die.
Answer: False.
Psalm 91 is a true promise of God's care, but it's not a good-luck charm. When the devil twisted this psalm, Jesus refused to treat God's promise that way.
"Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." — Matthew 4:7 (KJV)
9. According to Romans 8:38-39, what can separate a believer from the love of God in Christ Jesus?
A) Death
B) Being far from home
C) Hard times
D) Nothing at all
Answer: D) Nothing at all.
Neither death nor life. That covers everything. If you belong to Jesus Christ, your soul is safe in His hands.
"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." — Romans 8:38-39 (KJV)
10. Why did Jesus marvel at the centurion who asked Him to heal his servant?
A) Because of his great faith; he believed Jesus only had to speak the word
B) Because of his rank
C) Because he was rich
D) Because he brought many soldiers
Answer: A) Because of his great faith; he believed Jesus only had to speak the word.
As a man under authority, the centurion understood that Jesus had authority over sickness and everything else. The servant was healed that same hour.
"When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel." — Matthew 8:10 (KJV)
11. True or False: Cornelius had to leave the army before God would save him.
Answer: False.
God sent Peter to Cornelius' house, and while Peter was still speaking, they believed. God met this soldier right where he was serving.
"To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins." — Acts 10:43 (KJV)
12. According to Colossians 3:23, how should we do our work?
A) Only when someone is watching
B) As fast as possible
C) Heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men
D) Only the parts we like
Answer: C) Heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.
That means doing the job right when no one is watching, standing watch faithfully, and telling the truth even when it costs you.
"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;" — Colossians 3:23 (KJV)
