The Way of Salvation: Review Quiz

Lessons 1–4

Test what you learned in all four lessons of The Way of Salvation: Lesson 1 ("All Have Sinned"), Lesson 2 ("The Wages of Sin and the Gift of God"), Lesson 3 ("God So Loved the World"), and Lesson 4 ("By Grace Through Faith, Not of Works"). The answer is under each question.

1. According to Romans 3:23, who has sinned?
A) Only very bad people
B) Most people
C) All of us
D) Only people who don't go to church

Answer: C) All of us.
The first word of the verse is "all," which means every one of us, not some or most.

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" — Romans 3:23 (KJV)

2. True or False: A person who lives a pretty good life can reach God's perfect holiness on his own.

Answer: False.
Like an arrow that lands short of the target, everyone misses the mark, whether by a little or a lot.

"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:" — Romans 3:10 (KJV)

3. Isaiah 53:6 compares us to sheep. What does that picture show about sin?
A) We sin only when we openly rebel
B) We wander off and turn to our own way
C) Only some people go astray
D) Sheep never get lost

Answer: B) We wander off and turn to our own way.
Sheep usually don't run off in rebellion; they wander a little at a time until they are lost, and that is how sin works in most of our lives.

"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." — Isaiah 53:6 (KJV)

4. True or False: If we say we have no sin, the Bible says we are fooling ourselves.

Answer: True.
Saying "I'm not that bad" doesn't change the truth; the Bible says we deceive ourselves.

"If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." — 1 John 1:8 (KJV)

5. In Romans 6:23, what is a "wage"?
A) Something given as a favor
B) Something you earn
C) Something you can't get
D) A reward for good works

Answer: B) Something you earn.
Like a paycheck, a wage is what you have coming to you, and the wage sin pays is death.

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." — Romans 6:23 (KJV)

6. True or False: Death came to all people because all have sinned.

Answer: True.
Sin entered the world through one man, and death passed upon all men because all have sinned.

"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" — Romans 5:12 (KJV)

7. How do we get the gift of eternal life?
A) By working hard for it
B) By paying for it
C) By being better than other people
D) By receiving it freely, through faith in Jesus

Answer: D) By receiving it freely, through faith in Jesus.
A gift can't be earned or paid for; God counts faith for righteousness for the one who believes on Him.

"Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." — Romans 4:4-5 (KJV)

8. How can eternal life be a free gift to us when we earned death?
A) God ignores sin
B) Jesus bore our sins in His own body on the cross and paid for it
C) Our good deeds cancel out our sins
D) Sin doesn't really matter

Answer: B) Jesus bore our sins in His own body on the cross and paid for it.
The wage was ours, but Jesus took our sins on Himself, so the gift is free to us because He paid for it.

"Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed." — 1 Peter 2:24 (KJV)

9. According to John 3:16, why did God give His only begotten Son?
A) Because we had earned it
B) Because He so loved the world
C) Because some people were good enough
D) Because He had to

Answer: B) Because He so loved the world.
It starts with God, not with us. God loved the world, and that means every nation, every family, every sinner, and you.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." — John 3:16 (KJV)

10. True or False: Christ died for us only after we cleaned up our lives.

Answer: False.
God showed His love by sending Christ to die for us while we were yet sinners, not after we proved we were worth it.

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." — Romans 5:8 (KJV)

11. According to Ephesians 2:8-9, how is a person saved?
A) By grace through faith, as the gift of God
B) By doing more good than bad
C) By going to church enough
D) By being baptized and keeping the rules

Answer: A) By grace through faith, as the gift of God.
Grace is where salvation comes from, faith is how we receive it, and it is not of works, so no one can boast.

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." — Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)

12. True or False: A person who believes on the Son of God can know for sure that he has eternal life.

Answer: True.
God wrote these things so that we may know, not just hope, that we have eternal life. Our salvation rests on what Jesus did, and what He did is enough.

"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." — 1 John 5:13 (KJV)
