Welcome to Authorized Sword Ministries. This is Lesson 6 in our series, Who Is Jesus? Today's lesson is called His Name Shall Be Called: The Names and Titles of Christ.
We're so glad you're here.
Last time we saw that Jesus is God, manifest in the flesh. Today we're going to look at His names. In the Bible, a name is more than a label. It tells you who someone is and what they came to do. The Lord Jesus has many names and titles in Scripture, and each one shows us a different side of Him. We can't cover them all in one lesson, but we're going to look at some of the richest ones.
Our Key Verse
Today's key verse is Matthew 1:21. The angel of the Lord spoke these words to Joseph:
"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." — Matthew 1:21 (KJV)
Notice the word "for." His name was Jesus because of what He would do. The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew name Joshua, which means "the LORD is salvation." Every time you say His name, you are saying that God saves. And the angel told us exactly what He saves us from. Not just from trouble, not just from hard times, but from our sins.
Christ, the Anointed One
"Christ" is not Jesus' last name. It's a title. When Andrew first met Jesus, he ran to find his brother Simon Peter:
"He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ." — John 1:41 (KJV)
Messias, or Messiah, is the Hebrew word, and Christ is the Greek word. Both mean the anointed one. In the Old Testament, prophets, priests, and kings were anointed with oil to set them apart for their work. Jesus is the Anointed One above them all. He is the Prophet who speaks God's word, the Priest who offered Himself for us, and the King who will reign for ever. When we say "Jesus Christ," we are saying, "Jesus is the Messiah."
The I AM Sayings
In Lesson 5 we saw Jesus say, "Before Abraham was, I am." In the Gospel of John, Jesus also used "I am" to describe Himself in pictures we can all understand. Here are a few of them.
"And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." — John 6:35 (KJV)
He is the bread of life. He satisfies the hunger of the soul that nothing else can fill.
"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." — John 8:12 (KJV)
He is the light of the world. Without Him, men stumble in the dark.
"I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture." — John 10:9 (KJV)
He is the door. There is one way into the fold, and He is it.
"Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:" — John 11:25 (KJV)
He is the resurrection and the life. He said this at the grave of His friend Lazarus, and then He called Lazarus out of the tomb.
"I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." — John 15:5 (KJV)
He is the true vine. Every bit of real fruit in our lives comes from staying close to Him.
In earlier lessons we also heard Him say, "I am the good shepherd" and "I am the way, the truth, and the life." Put them all together, and you see that Jesus is everything we need.
The Son of Man
One title Jesus often used for Himself was "the Son of man." Some think it only means He was human. He was truly human, but the title goes deeper than that. It comes from a vision the prophet Daniel saw:
"I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him." — Daniel 7:13 (KJV)
The Son of man in Daniel comes with the clouds of heaven and is brought before God's throne. So when Jesus called Himself the Son of man, He was saying, "I am the one Daniel saw." At His trial He said it plainly, and the high priest tore his clothes, because he understood the claim.
The Last Adam
Paul gives Jesus a name that takes us back to the garden:
"And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit." — 1 Corinthians 15:45 (KJV)
The first Adam brought sin and death into the world. The last Adam came to undo it. Everyone is "in Adam" by birth. The good news is that anyone can be "in Christ" by the new birth. "Quickening" is an old word for giving life. The first Adam received life. The last Adam gives it.
The Lion and the Lamb
In Revelation 5, John wept because no one was worthy to open the book in God's hand. Then an elder told him:
"And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof." — Revelation 5:5 (KJV)
John turned to see a lion, and what did he see? The very next verse says he saw "a Lamb as it had been slain." That's the beauty of our Saviour. He is the Lamb who was slain for our sins, and He is the Lion who conquers. Meek enough to die for us, strong enough to defeat every enemy.
The Bright and Morning Star
Near the very end of the Bible, Jesus gives us one more name:
"I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star." — Revelation 22:16 (KJV)
The morning star shines brightest just before dawn, when the night is darkest. It's the sign that a new day is coming. Whatever darkness you're in right now, Jesus is the promise that the morning is on its way.
A Name Worth Calling On
All these names come back to one simple truth. You can call on Him:
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." — Romans 10:13 (KJV)
You don't need to know every name and title to be saved. You just need to call on the one who bears them.
A Simple Step for This Week
Here's our challenge for this week. Take one name of Jesus each day this week and think about it. Monday, Jesus, the Lord is salvation. Tuesday, Christ, the Anointed One. Wednesday, the bread of life. Thursday, the light of the world. Friday, the good shepherd. Saturday, the Lion and the Lamb. Sunday, the bright and morning star. Each morning, thank Him for being that to you.
A Prayer
Let's pray together.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the name of Jesus, the name that is above every name. Lord Jesus, You are the bread of life, the light of the world, the door, the resurrection and the life, and the true vine. You are the Lion of the tribe of Juda and the Lamb that was slain.
Help us to know You better through every name You have given us, and help us to call on Your name in every need.
In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Thank you for spending this time with us.
This is Authorized Sword Ministries. God bless you.
