Welcome to Authorized Sword Ministries. This is Lesson 8 in our series, Who Is Jesus? Today's lesson is called The King on His Throne: The Coming Reign of Christ.
We're so glad you're here.
In Lesson 4 we learned that the King is coming. Jesus promised He would come again, He will take His people to be with Him, and He will wipe away every tear. Today we go deeper. What happens when the King actually sits on His throne? What will His reign be like? And what does it mean for His people, and for those who have rejected Him? We have seen that Jesus is God in the flesh, that His names show us who He is, and that He fulfilled the prophecies of His first coming. Now we'll see what the Bible says about how He will rule.
Our Key Verse
Today's key verse is Revelation 11:15.
"And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever." — Revelation 11:15 (KJV)
Every kingdom of this world, every nation, every government, every ruler, will one day belong to the Lord Jesus Christ. Right now, men fight over power. But a day is coming when the question of who rules the world will be settled for ever.
Daniel Saw the Kingdom Given
In Lesson 6 we looked at Daniel's vision of "one like the Son of man" coming with the clouds of heaven. Here's what happens next in that same vision:
"And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed." — Daniel 7:14 (KJV)
Every earthly empire Daniel saw in his visions rose and fell. Babylon fell. Persia fell. Greece fell. But the kingdom given to the Son of man "shall not be destroyed."
The King Comes in Victory
When Jesus came the first time, He rode a donkey. When He comes to reign, He comes on a white horse:
"And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war." — Revelation 19:11 (KJV)
The prophet Zechariah even told us where His feet will touch down:
"And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south." — Zechariah 14:4 (KJV)
Remember, in Acts 1 Jesus went up from the mount of Olives, and the angels said He would come again "in like manner." He left from that mountain, and He will return to that mountain.
"And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one." — Zechariah 14:9 (KJV)
What His Reign Will Be Like
Think about the worst things in this world: war, injustice, crooked courts, the strong crushing the weak. Now listen to what Isaiah says about Christ's reign:
"And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." — Isaiah 2:4 (KJV)
No more war. No more military schools. Weapons melted down into farm tools. And it reaches all the way down into creation itself:
"They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea." — Isaiah 11:9 (KJV)
Just before that verse, Isaiah tells us the wolf will dwell with the lamb and a little child shall lead them. The whole earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord. Every leader you've ever been let down by, every broken promise from a politician, all of it will give way to a King who is perfectly righteous.
His People Will Reign with Him
Here's something amazing. The King won't reign alone. John saw this:
"Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years." — Revelation 20:6 (KJV)
Those who belong to Christ will share in His reign. Paul said the same thing to Timothy:
"If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:" — 2 Timothy 2:12 (KJV)
Whatever you suffer for Jesus now is not wasted. The believer who is mocked for his faith today will reign with Christ tomorrow.
The King Is Also the Judge
A king in Bible times was also the judge of his people. Jesus is no different. He Himself said:
"For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:" — John 5:22 (KJV)
For believers, there is a judgment of our works, not to decide whether we go to heaven, but to give rewards:
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad." — 2 Corinthians 5:10 (KJV)
And for those who rejected Him, there is a final judgment at the end:
"And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them." — Revelation 20:11 (KJV)
"And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." — Revelation 20:15 (KJV)
These are hard words, but they are true, and we love you too much to leave them out. The same Jesus who will sit on that throne is the Jesus who died to keep you from standing there without Him. Today He is your Saviour if you'll come to Him. One day He will be every man's Judge.
The Last Enemy
Paul tells us how the reign of Christ ends:
"For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." — 1 Corinthians 15:25-26 (KJV)
Sin will be judged. Satan will be cast down. And death itself, the enemy that has taken every person you've ever buried, will be destroyed. The King wins.
Is He Your King Today?
Jesus will be King over all the earth. The only question is whether you'll bow to Him now, gladly, as your Saviour, or later, as your Judge. If you've never trusted Him, you can do it today. Confess that you're a sinner, believe that He died for your sins and rose again, and call on Him to save you. And if you already know Him, live today like a citizen of His kingdom.
A Simple Step for This Week
Here's our challenge for this week. Each morning, start your prayer with these words of Jesus: "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6:10). Then ask yourself, "Where in my life today do I need to let Jesus be King?"
A Prayer
Let's pray together.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and that He shall reign for ever and ever. Lord Jesus, You are Faithful and True. You are the righteous Judge, and You are the King of kings.
Rule in our hearts today. Help us to live as Your people, to suffer for You without shame, and to tell others about You while there is still time.
Thy kingdom come.
In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Thank you for spending this time with us.
This is Authorized Sword Ministries. God bless you.
